The huapango is a popular dance originating on the east coast of Mexico. Its subtle alternation of 2 & 3 can be demonstrated in this recitation: MEX-ico, EC-uador, CHI-le, COS-ta, RI-ca. These dances can be likened to diarist entries written during an extended stay in Mexico’s west coast state of Nayarit. Following each sultry day of exploring the beaches, I would come back to the bungalow and seek out a spezial cool corridor to put pencil to staff. The titles reveal favorite places and the name of our esteemed bungalow manager, Ofelia Silva. The addition of an improvising percussionist could enhance performance. Instrumentation: violin and cello
In 1953 Hollywood, Penny is just another washed-up, wannabe actress past her prime. She has settled into a quieter lifestyle, and when she comes across a low-rent bungalow in Canyon Arms, it's a dream come true. Penny takes to the place instantly. But the dream bungalow with its French doors and tiled courtyard may not be quite so perfect. Penny's neighbours start filling her head with stories about past tenants, whispering voices, and a suicide that may not have been a suicide. Soon enough, Penny starts hearing stranger noises in her bungalow and she can't help but wonder about the true fate of the bookseller who died in her home a dozen years earlier. And her suspicions are only fuelled by the ominous inscription that she discovers in a book closely guarded by her landlord...
The Chicago Bungalow is more than a housing style indigenous to the city. It epitomizes Chicago's work ethic and its rewards for successive waves of ethnic newcomers to the city since the early 20th century. In this book, the Chicago Architecture Foundation interprets both the design and the meaning of these homes, in keeping with CAF's mission to raise awareness of Chicago's architectural legacy. After 1915, new neighborhoods appeared across the prairie. The Chicago-style bungalow came to both dominate and symbolize these areas. A one and one-half story single-family freestanding home, it included such conveniences as electricity, indoor plumbing, and central heat. Chicagoans built some 80,000 bungalows. Another 20,000 were built in suburban Cook County. Nearly every ethnic and racial group in the area has made its way at one time or another to the Bungalow Belt. Today the Bungalow Belt includes white ethnic, African American, Latino, and Asian families.
Still operating within a nineteenth-century labor and contracting system, small home builders responded to rising consumer demand for new conveniences such as electricity and central heating by simplifying their structures. Ambitious salespeople - real estate agents, plan book purveyors, and builders - created a new market for affordable small houses through astute advertising and financing. And once families acquired their homes, they used them flexibly, adapting their lives to their domestic spaces and refashioning their homes when necessary. From such efforts sprang the Seattle bungalow, an artifact of ordinary people's part in creating modern culture.
